Chapter 71 Central Dining Hall
The murky water was up to their chests as the group waded through it, moving slowly forward.
Zou Yu, leading a dozen or so Awakened Ones, swam silently ahead, occasionally turning back to glance at Han Ning.
"What exactly is the situation with those monsters?"
The group swam relatively slowly, so Han Ning didn't activate his gill technique and followed them along at a leisurely pace.
Zou Yu replied:
"The fishmen are mainly based in the largest student cafeteria in the North District. That building has five floors, and the first floor is probably completely submerged."
"These monsters... resemble humanoids, but are more like a twisted combination of fish and humans, with skin covered in slippery scales, webbed fingers, flat heads, and mouths filled with fine, sharp teeth."
His tone carried a hint of apprehension:
"Ordinary fishmen are very fast and strong, and they are exceptionally agile in the water, comparable to newly awakened Awakeners."
“What’s more troublesome are those elite individuals… They have the ability to manipulate water flow, launch high-pressure water jets, or create small whirlpools to disrupt the flow.”
"Moreover..." Zou Yu's voice lowered, "they have an extremely dangerous attack method—face-grabbing!"
"Cover your face?" Han Ning raised an eyebrow.
“Yes!” A fellow Awakened individual with a sallow complexion couldn’t help but interject.
"Like aliens in movies, they suddenly leap out of the water or shadows with astonishing speed, using their slippery bodies to tightly wrap around your head and face, their sharp claws digging into your flesh, and at the same time..."
"They will try to crawl into your mouth, nose, or ears with their disgusting mouths. Once you get entangled, you will almost certainly die. Several of our companions died this way."
Zou Yu picked up the conversation and continued:
"These monsters... didn't originally exist in our school."
"About ten days ago, they suddenly surged in from the northwest. Shortly after they appeared, the water level in the school began to rise abnormally and flooded the low-lying areas."
He looked to the northwest, where the rain was even heavier and the floodwaters stretched as far as the eye could see.
"We suspect that something dramatic may have happened in the northwest that brought these monsters and the floodwaters here together."
"Northwest direction?" Han Ning silently memorized the information they provided.
The team members chatted amongst themselves from time to time.
You'll often encounter some wandering merfolk on the road.
They have slippery skin similar to toads, some are yellowish-brown and some are light purple, and they look disgusting.
Faced with the elite human squad, these wandering merfolk were reduced to blood and gore before they could even react.
About twenty minutes later, the team arrived at the target area.
They deliberately avoided areas with many fish-men and stopped above a submerged green belt.
Ahead, a large five-story building is submerged in murky water; this is the central canteen.
The floodwaters had already reached above the first floor, appearing and disappearing in the rain and mist.
The dark window was deathly silent, with rain constantly pouring in.
“This is it.” Zou Yu stopped swimming. “Most of the monsters are hiding inside the canteen. They are like amphibians, usually staying on land and only entering the water when hunting.”
After saying that, he looked at Han Ning, the meaning of which was self-evident.
Han Ning understood what the other party meant and said, "Zou Yu, take a few people over there and lure the monsters out."
Zou Yu's expression changed: "You...didn't you say you'd help us deal with the leader?"
"I don't know what's going on inside. What if there's a trap?" Han Ning looked directly into Zou Yu's eyes.
Zou Yu's expression turned somewhat grim, and he shook his head: "Why don't we go in together? We can't let our people go in first."
Han Ning remained silent.
He picked up a stone from the bottom of the water and gently tossed it toward a relatively intact window on the second floor.
Whoosh!
To the astonishment of Zou Yu and the others, the stone struck a relatively intact glass window on the second floor of the cafeteria with pinpoint accuracy.
Wow!
A sharp, piercing sound of shattering glass suddenly erupted, extremely jarring.
"You!" Zou Yu was both shocked and furious.
The loud sound of shattering glass, like a pebble thrown into a calm pond, broke the silence in the cafeteria.
"Da da da~"
On the second floor of the cafeteria, a dense, sticky sound of footsteps could be heard.
"Shh, shh..."
Several enormous fish heads were visible behind the windowsill.
The pair of dead fish eyes, black and yellow, located on either side of the head, rolled around a few times and quickly locked onto the crowd downstairs.
"Gah! Hehehe!"
Immediately afterwards, figures covered in slippery scales, like startled mice, kept emerging from the broken windows and underwater doorways.
They headed straight towards where Han Ning and the others were.
Their numbers were so great that they were almost like rats.
In the blink of an eye, they surrounded the area where everyone was.
"You he……"
Zou Yu was so angry that his eyes almost popped out of their sockets as he watched the fishmen surging in like a tidal wave. He was about to burst into a tirade of curses.
"Gah! Hehehe!"
The fishman at the front row roared and pounced on him, its slippery claws reaching for his face.
"Oh shit!"
He could only swallow his curses, and a ball of pale blue flame exploded in his palm, blasting the charging merman away.
The other awakened ones were plunged into a fierce battle.
"Get into formation, Ronaldinho, go ahead and hold them off!"
Zou Yu glared at Han Ning, then conjured two fireballs in his hands, throwing them at the school of fish while issuing commands.
Boom! Crack!
"kill!"
The 20 awakened individuals from the Agricultural and Forestry University were forced to fight against the fish-men.
Meanwhile, Han Ning, the instigator, remained a bystander, watching the scene unfold without making any move.
But as soon as any murloc gets within 2 meters of him, vines will shoot out and blast the murloc into pieces.
Su Mingke saw her companion being attacked and wanted to help, but she was entangled by Han Ning's vines and brought back.
She refused to give up, her body surging with black energy, her form becoming blurred.
Vines appeared, wrapped around her waist, and forcefully pulled her back from her ethereal state.
"You treacherous villain! You stood by and watched me die!" She turned and glared at Han Ning, her eyes practically spitting fire.
Han Ning didn't even lift his eyelids.
His gaze pierced through the chaotic battlefield and locked onto a broken window on the third floor of the cafeteria.
There, several pairs of cold, fish-like eyes silently peered through the rain, watching the battle below.
……
There are too many murlocs.
Gradually, the battle lines began to falter under the relentless onslaught of the murlocs.
A young awakened being a fraction of a second slower was grabbed by the leg by a merman who pounced from the side.
"Heh, heh~"
The slippery body scrambled onto him in a few moments, its claws digging into his flesh, and its flat fish head lunging straight for his mouth and nose.
"Ah! Help! Help me!" he screamed in terror, tearing at the wound with all his might.
laugh!
A vine flashed past his eyes and pierced through the fishman's head.
Blood and brain matter splattered everywhere.
The fishman froze, then slumped to the ground.
Chapter 72 Devastated
On the flank of the group, a relatively thin young awakened being was forced back by several murlocs working together. He stepped on a slippery floating object and staggered backward.
A gap suddenly appeared in the defenses in front of him.
A fierce glint flashed in the eyes of an exceptionally burly fishman, who seized the fleeting opportunity and plunged straight into the young awakened one's wide-open chest.
If that claw lands firmly, death is certain!
Despair filled the eyes of the young awakened ones.
At the critical moment.
call out!
A dark green afterimage appeared first, then disappeared.
puff.
The vine pierced through the head of the merman who had attacked it, emerging from the back of its skull and bringing with it a spray of blood and brain matter.
The fish-man's movements came to an abrupt halt, its claws stopping just inches from the young awakened one's chest before he collapsed, powerless.
