Chapter 539 Voldemort's Fear
Chapter 539 Voldemort's Fear
Siren finally understood why Fawkes was able to find his place. The phoenix tail feather that was given to Hagrid was likely specially made by Dumbledore, which could resonate with Fawkes's own magic within a certain range.
This must be Dumbledore's backup plan, so that even if Harry is suddenly kidnapped, he can get there in time.
Dumbledore never expected that Voldemort's real target would be Siren. Fortunately, Hagrid also gave Siren a wallet.
This gave Dumbledore a slight sense of relief.
After all, Sirius had told him a long time ago that Sirius had a problem, but for some reason, he had not been able to resolve it.
So when Dumbledore learned that Voldemort had actually captured Siron, he was more afraid than anyone else, even terrified.
If Cyrus is killed by Voldemort because of this—then this guilt will be like a cold, indelible brand, nailed to him, because he had the chance to stop it.
Even now, Dumbledore still feels lingering fear.
"Speaking of which, you've really given me a big surprise," Dumbledore said jokingly.
"What?"
"Do you remember the message you asked me to pass on to Tom?" Dumbledore said. "We've fought countless times, and he's rarely been this irrational, so frantic as to want to kill me, even to take me down with him."
"Riddle, this is a taboo he never wanted to mention, but you've brought it up yourself."
"I am—well, I saw it in a notebook," Xilun stammered.
"I have no intention of prying into your secrets." Dumbledore shook his head. "Although few people know that the once-distinguished student council president, Tom Riddle, was Voldemort, there are always one or two who do know."
"Actually, I'm more curious about what you did." He looked at Xilen, a hint of doubt flashing in his bright blue eyes.
"Tom has always been arrogant. Perhaps in his eyes, most wizards are no different from cabbages, not worthy of his attention at all. The only person he has ever hated to such an extent, to the point of being determined to kill with his own hands, is Harry—"
"But now, Siron, you've become the second one, and his hatred for you even surpasses that for Harry. This is something I've never been able to understand. As far as I know, there shouldn't be any grudge between you and Tom. And even during the most chaotic period more than a decade ago, he didn't deliberately target Ollivander's Wand Shop."
"Actually, there is a bit of a grudge." After hesitating for a moment, Xiren told Dumbledore about how he had used the power of the unicorn in the underground classroom a few years ago to hurt Voldemort in his ghostly state and tore off a small piece of his body.
"That's it, but I didn't expect him to hold a grudge for so long," Sirius said, completely oblivious to how strange Dumbledore's expression was. It was the astonishment of having one's understanding shattered—probably similar to when Garrick Ollivander first met Silvermane.
"You mean, the soul of the unicorn you summoned can harm wandering spirits that haven't been resurrected yet?" he couldn't help but ask.
"It was only a tiny bit, about the size of a nut," Siren gestured with his finger. "Unfortunately, he ran too fast back then."
Dumbledore didn't say anything more. It took him a long time to convince himself to believe in Sherren—and to be honest, it wasn't an easy thing to do.
Since he first encountered magic, Dumbledore had never heard of any spell or object that could kill a dead person.
So far, wizards have not discovered any way to harm ghosts; even the most terrifying dark creatures in history, such as basilisks, can only be petrified at most.
However, the petrified ghost can still maintain its original state and cannot be touched by anything.
From a magical perspective, a wandering spirit is a more mysterious state than a ghost. In this state, even if Voldemort saw the basilisk's eyes, he would not react in any way.
Because its soul is incomplete, like a tattered rag riddled with holes, it cannot bear anything—including the basilisk's curse.
"I think I know why he wants to kill you," Dumbledore said again after about ten minutes.
"Why?" Xilun asked.
"He's scared," Dumbledore said softly.
After accepting Xilun's explanation, things became simpler.
"Tom hates Harry because the defeat that night almost cost him everything. But because of something, he wasn't completely killed, and that was his last secret and reliance."
"But Siren, you've shown Tom that his last resort has failed."
Dumbledore stood up, took a bottle of whiskey from the shelf next to him, and poured himself a glass.
This was the first time Siren had ever seen Dumbledore drink strong liquor; most of the time he drank tea.
Dumbledore himself doesn't like spirits, which can affect his mind, but this is an exception.
Because Dumbledore discovered a way to kill Voldemort—a way to kill him completely without destroying all of his Horcruxes.
Horcruxes have always been the biggest obstacle to defeating Voldemort. As long as they exist, Voldemort will never truly be killed. Even if he looks wretched, even if his spirit is as insignificant as an insect, he is still alive. No matter how much time passes, he can always return given the right opportunity.
This is what Dumbledore has been doing ever since he learned that Voldemort had returned.
He needed to know how many Horcruxes Voldemort had made, their locations, and to destroy them one by one.
Before all that is done, killing Voldemort is pointless.
But if the wandering spirit that is the main body can be destroyed, are those Horcruxes still useful?
Dumbledore took a sip of whiskey, the fiery spirit turning his face red.
But at that moment, Fox suddenly flew in, carrying an envelope in his mouth.
He put the envelope down, and Dumbledore opened it and glanced at it, then his expression immediately turned serious.
"Things always come one after another—" He stood up and put the rest of the whiskey back in its place.
"In short, Sirius, Harry can't kill Tom completely, but he can, so he will do anything to kill you."
"I'll be careful," Celen nodded. "But school starts soon, he definitely won't dare to break into Hogwarts, right?"
"Of course, I can guarantee that," Dumbledore said with a smile.
