Chapter 1 Walking Corpses
Chapter 1 Walking Corpses
At the foot of the Qinling Mountains lies the small town of Gejiaji.
Midnight.
"Creak—"
A light came on in a house in the west of the town, and a middle-aged man wearing a coat came out of the house and urinated in a corner.
Just then, a strange "tap-tap" sound suddenly came from the pitch-black night to the west.
The middle-aged man turned his head in surprise and saw a figure drifting over.
Upon arriving, they found a pale-faced man leading a donkey, with a disheveled woman in red sitting on its back.
A man and a woman stared at him, their dark mouths gaping open, laughing silently.
"Uh..." The middle-aged man didn't even have time to pull up his pants before his eyes rolled back and he fainted.
……
The next morning, the townspeople gathered at the old clan chief's house, a huge, noisy crowd.
In the middle of the crowd, the middle-aged man who had fainted from fright the night before squatted on the ground, his body trembling slightly. He said with lingering fear, "I really saw Ge Lao Er come back to life! He was leading a donkey, and a beautiful woman was sitting on it. The two of them were smiling at me!"
An old woman cursed, "Bullshit! Ge Lao Er has been dead for seven days, and you were the one who drank the most on the day of his burial!"
The middle-aged man raised his hand and cursed: "If I, Ge Sanhuai, am lying, may I be poor for the rest of my life."
The old clan chief, a man in his sixties, tapped his pipe: "Something's not right. Let's go check on Ge Lao Er's grave!"
The whole town ran towards the back of the mountain and soon arrived at a grave.
When everyone looked at the grave, their expressions changed.
There was a hole in the grave, and the body in the coffin was gone.
Despite it being broad daylight, it still sent chills down everyone's spines.
The old clan chief and his group of elders were also a bit panicked: "The person had been dead for seven or eight days, and then ran off in the middle of the night. This...this is some kind of evil spirit!"
An old woman said, "If Master Zhou hadn't died, this matter would have been much easier to handle."
The old clan chief's eyes lit up: "Let's try his son, Zhou Fengchen. That kid should have some skills!"
The old woman gave a dry laugh: "Zhou Fengchen has been locked up by you for several days!"
The old clan chief stroked his beard and said, "Let's ask him first!"
……
A group of people left the town and arrived at a dilapidated temple on a low hill west of the town. The old clan chief shouted through the crack in the door, "Chenwazi, what are you doing?"
After three shouts, a scraping sound of chains came from inside, followed by an impatient voice: "Dead!"
The old clan chief and his group looked at each other in bewilderment. They opened the door, revealing a dilapidated room covered in cobwebs. At the very back was a stone statue of a god, and a young man in his early twenties was chained to the statue with four iron chains.
The young man was handsome, but his gait made him seem somewhat carefree and irresponsible.
The old clan chief chuckled dryly, "Oh! Still throwing a tantrum?"
The young man shifted to a more comfortable position and said, "Nonsense! Try being locked in this dilapidated temple for thirteen days, eating only two bowls of noodles a day!"
The old patriarch's face twitched, and he coughed before asking, "Chenwa, let me ask you something. Did your father, Zhou Daoxing, teach you any skills before he died?"
Everyone in the surrounding villages and towns knows Master Zhou. He's a wandering Taoist priest from out of town named Zhou Daoxing. He lives in a cave he dug on Millet Mountain outside the town, and he wears a tattered robe all day long. There's nothing he can't do. His specialty is playing the suona (a traditional Chinese wind instrument). Whenever an elderly person in the town passes away, he plays the suona with incredible skill.
Old Master Zhou never married. More than ten years ago, he brought back a pair of children from outside to raise, one of whom was Zhou Fengchen!
This boy was clever and well-behaved from a young age, and loved by everyone. However, ever since Zhou Daoxing died five years ago, and his sister Zhou Linglong ran away from home the following year, he has been left unsupervised and has started to become a scoundrel. He knocks on the doors of widows, digs up graves of the deceased, and even castrates the old clan chief's big wolfhound that he had raised for more than 20 years, which died in depression.
Anyway, there's no bastard he wouldn't dare to do, and the key is that no one can control him!
Two weeks ago, he stole the prettiest girl in town's underwear and put it on a sow, which made the girl so angry that she almost committed suicide.
The old clan chief, along with more than thirty strong young men, chased him for a whole day before finally capturing him and chaining him to the mountain god's temple with four large iron chains.
Upon hearing the old clan chief's words, Zhou Fengchen chuckled and said, "Young man, why are you asking so suddenly? Has something happened in town?"
The old clan chief slapped his thigh and exclaimed, "Wow! Amazing, Chenwa! How could you guess that?"
Zhou Fengchen smiled proudly and said, "Of course! My skills are among the top ten in the world. To be honest, this place is not good. It's easy for dirty things to come here. If it weren't for me keeping it in check, you would have been finished long ago."
"You really think I'm following Widow Zhang? She's got some filthy thing following her! You really think I want to castrate the old clan chief's dog? That dog's lived for over twenty years, it's practically a demon! Understand?"
"Amazing! Amazing!" The old clan leader and his group couldn't help but applaud.
Zhou Fengchen changed his posture again: "Stop flattering me! I'm not buying it! Get to the point."
The old clan chief said, "Then I'll be frank. Ge Lao Er, who made a living sharpening scissors in town, died on the northwest slope in the middle of the night a few days ago. His head was in the mud and his two legs were on top! It's very strange! His son, Da Gang, came back and held the funeral. Originally, this was nothing.
Then yesterday, Ge Sanhuai saw him come back to life in the middle of the night, leading a donkey with a girl on its back. We went to his grave, and guess what? The body was gone! My God, it was a zombie!
Ge Sanhuai immediately stepped forward, "I'll testify! I vouch for it with my integrity!"
"You have absolutely no integrity!"
Zhou Fengchen dropped his nonchalant tone and asked, "How many days has it been since Ge Lao Er passed away yesterday?"
The old clan chief counted on his fingers and said, "The seventh day!"
Zhou Fengchen's expression was serious: "On the seventh day after death, yin energy is at its peak, a corpse is found walking, being led by a rope, and a woman is sitting beside it—this is an extremely ominous sign!"
The old clan chief and his group turned pale with fright: "What do you mean?"
Zhou Fengchen said, "Something big has happened!"
"You have to help with this!"
The old clan chief quickly led his men forward to unlock the chain.
"Wait!"
Zhou Fengchen raised an eyebrow and said, "I heard the other day that you and Grandma Lan sold Millet Mountain and were planning to hire an archaeological team from the city to excavate ancient tombs? I don't agree to that!"
The old clan chief and Granny Lan behind him exchanged a glance and said, "Let's keep things separate. Why bring this up? Millet Mountain isn't yours, is it?"
Zhou Fengchen said sternly, "My family's cave is up there, and that hill is my family's ancestral graveyard! Anyone who dares to touch it shouldn't blame me for being impolite!"
The old clan chief jumped up and down, shouting, "Your whole family are outsiders, where did you get ancestral graves? I'm too lazy to argue with you, let's go!"
The conversation went astray, and the group forgot about Ge Lao Er's matter, turning around and leaving.
Zhou Fengchen sneered at the retreating figures of the group, saying, "You're all greedy! If you don't untie me, something bad will happen tonight!"
The old clan chief and his group ignored them and went down the mountain without looking back.
……
That night, every household kept their doors tightly shut, with tables and chairs propped up behind them, and no one dared to go out.
Silent all night.
Another strange thing happened early the next morning!
A man named Ge Maosheng from the town ran to the old clan chief's house, looking distraught. He said that last night he had also seen Ge Lao Er, who had been dead for seven days, and a woman in red riding a donkey past his house, but...
Ge Sanhuai walked ahead, leading the donkey rope for them!
