Chapter 110 Avenging His Wife!
Chapter 110 Avenging His Wife!
Bai Rongbei's movements stopped abruptly.
"I..." Su Wanwan's eyes were half-open, her voice soft, "I'm a little scared..."
She didn't finish her sentence, but she didn't loosen her grip.
Bai Rongbei looked at her.
Her face was still a little pale, and her eyelashes drooped, casting a small shadow under her eyes.
Her fingers, thin and delicate, gripped his clothes tightly.
He was silent for a few seconds, then bent down and gently kissed her forehead.
"Go to sleep," he said. "I'm not leaving; I'll stay here."
Su Wanwan blinked and looked at him.
Bai Rongbei sat down on the ground next to his bunk, leaning against the earthen wall with his long legs bent.
"Are you really not leaving?" she asked.
"Okay." Bai Rongbei nodded. "You sleep, I'll keep watch."
Su Wanwan looked at him for a while, then gently released her hand and closed her eyes.
This time, she fell into a deep sleep very quickly.
Breathing became even, and eyelashes stopped fluttering.
Bai Rongbei sat there, listening to her breathing, his gaze fixed on her face.
The earthen house was dimly lit, with only a little light coming in through the small window.
The other women in the room tiptoed out and closed the door behind them.
The room was very quiet.
Bai Rongbei sat for about twenty minutes, making sure Su Wanwan was sound asleep, before slowly standing up.
He moved very quietly, without making a sound.
He walked to the door, opened it, and then looked back once more.
On her bunk, Su Wanwan was curled up, half her face buried in the pillow, fast asleep.
He closed the door and went out.
The sunlight in the courtyard was blinding.
Bai Rongbei narrowed his eyes, the gentleness on his face quickly fading, replaced by his usual coldness.
He strode toward the production team office.
Officer Zhang was talking to someone inside when he saw him come in and stood up: "Commander Bai."
"What about the people we arrested last night?" Bai Rongbei asked.
"He's locked up in the warehouse next door, and someone's watching him," Officer Zhang said. "We interrogated him all night, but he's stubborn and we couldn't get anything out of him."
Bai Rongbei nodded: "I'll go take a look."
The warehouse was an adobe house, the door was locked, and two soldiers were standing outside.
Upon seeing Bai Rongbei, the two men stood at attention and saluted.
"Open the door," Bai Rongbei said.
The door opened, and the light inside became even dimmer.
A short, stocky man was huddled in the corner, dressed in coarse cloth. His hands and feet were bound, and he had injuries on his face and a cut at the corner of his mouth that was oozing blood.
Hearing the noise, he looked up, saw Bai Rongbei, his eyes flickered, and then he lowered his head again.
Bai Rongbei walked in, and the door closed behind him.
There were only the two of them in the warehouse.
Bai Rongbei didn't say anything, walked up to the man, and squatted down.
"Name," he said, his voice not loud, but carrying a powerful force.
The short, stocky man remained silent.
Bai Rongbei waited a few seconds, then suddenly reached out and grabbed his hair, forcing him to raise his head.
"I asked you your name." Bai Rongbei looked at him, his eyes as cold as ice.
The short, stocky man struggled for a moment but couldn't break free. He spat out, "Pah! Kill me or do whatever you want!"
Bai Rongbei didn't get angry, but increased the force in his hand.
The short, stocky man grimaced in pain, but he still stubbornly endured it.
"Who else was with you last night?" Bai Rongbei asked.
"have no idea!"
"Did you hide the child?"
"have no idea!"
"What is the purpose?"
"have no idea!"
Several in a row I don't know.
Bai Rongbei released his grip and stood up.
The short, stocky man thought he had given up and breathed a sigh of relief.
But the next second, Bai Rongbei kicked him in the chest.
The kick was extremely powerful, and the short, stocky man slammed backward against the wall, groaning and coughing up a mouthful of blood.
Bai Rongbei walked over and stepped on one of his arms.
"I'll ask you one more time," his voice remained steady, but his foot pressed down harder, "who else was with you last night?"
The bones creaked as they were stepped on.
The short, stocky man was deathly pale, cold sweat beading on his forehead, but he still gritted his teeth and said, "Just... just me..."
Bai Rongbei added more force with his foot.
"Ah!" The short, stocky man finally couldn't hold back and screamed, "I'll talk! I'll talk!"
Bai Rong opened his legs to the north.
The short, stocky man lay sprawled on the ground, panting heavily, his chest heaving violently.
"Two...and two more..." His voice trembled. "One was tall, with a scar on his face...and one was skinny, missing a piece from his left ear..."
"Where did you go?"
"I don't know... something happened last night, and they ran away... saying they'd meet at... our usual spot..."
"Where is the usual place?"
"On...on the western side of the Gobi Desert, there is an abandoned beacon tower..."
Bai Rongbei stared at him: "If you dare to lie."
"No! No!" The short, stocky man shook his head repeatedly. "That's the place! We agreed that if anything happened, we'd wait there for three days..."
Bai Rongbei stood up, looked at him for a while, then turned and walked out of the warehouse.
Outside the door, Officer Zhang was waiting.
"Did you get the answer?" Officer Zhang asked.
"Yes." Bai Rongbei nodded. "There are two more, in the abandoned beacon towers on the west side of the Gobi Desert."
He paused for a moment, then said, "I'll take some men to arrest them now."
"Now?" Officer Zhang glanced at the sky.
"Yes." Bai Rongbei interrupted him, "If we wait even one more minute, they might run far away."
After he finished speaking, he strode out of the courtyard.
Officer Zhang quickly followed, saying, "I'll bring a few people with me!"
"No need." Bai Rongbei didn't even turn his head. "You guys stay here and keep an eye on the performance. I'll bring my own people."
He walked to the jeep, opened the door, and said something to the driver.
The car started, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Officer Zhang stood in the courtyard, watching the car drive away, and sighed.
A staff member leaned over and asked, "Staff Member Zhang, what's Commander Bai doing here...?"
"Arrest them," Officer Zhang said. "To avenge Comrade Su Wanwan."
The officer paused for a moment, then asked, "Revenge?"
Officer Zhang didn't explain, he just shook his head: "You didn't see the look in his eyes just now... That spy is probably in for a rough time."
……
On the Gobi Desert, the sun is scorching.
The jeep bumped along the gravel road, kicking up yellow dust.
Bai Rongbei sat in the passenger seat, holding a simple map in his hand, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
The soldier driving the car was named Xiao Chen. He was a soldier in the Bai Rong Bei Regiment. He was a good driver and a quick-witted person.
"Commander, can we really find it?" Xiao Chen asked.
"Yes," Bai Rongbei said. "I know that place; I've patrolled there before."
Xiao Chen stopped asking questions and focused on driving.
After driving for about an hour, a black dot appeared in the distance.
It was an abandoned rammed earth beacon tower, standing dilapidated on the Gobi Desert, with only half of it remaining.
Bai Rongbei had the car stop some distance away.
He picked up the binoculars and observed for a while.
There was no one around the beacon tower, but there was a shadow beneath it that obscured the view.
"You wait here," Bai Rongbei said to Xiao Chen. "If I don't come out in half an hour, go back and report."
"Commander, I'll go with you!" Xiao Chen said.
"Follow orders." Bai Rongbei glanced at him.
Xiao Chen shut his mouth and nodded.
Bai Rongbei got out of the car, took out a water bottle and a gun, and tucked them into his waistband.
He took another rope and tied it around his hand.
He bent over, using the sand dunes and bushes for cover, and slowly approached the beacon tower.
The Gobi Desert was so quiet that only the wind could be heard.
The sun scorched the sand, and the rising heat distorted the view.
Sweat beaded on Bai Rongbei's forehead. He wiped it away and continued forward.
When he was more than 100 meters away from the beacon tower, he stopped, lay down behind a sand dune, and raised his binoculars again.
I saw it clearly this time.
Two people sat in the shadows beneath the beacon tower.
He was a tall man with a scar on his face, running from his brow bone to the corner of his mouth.
The other one was thinner, and had a small piece missing from his left ear.
The two were drinking water and eating dry food, talking in hushed tones as they ate.
Bai Rongbei put down his binoculars, took the water bottle and gun from his waist, and placed them on the sand.
He took only the rope and quietly circled around to the other side of the beacon tower.
Half of the earthen wall collapsed, leaving a gap.
Bai Rongbei crawled through the gap; it was cooler inside, but very dusty.
He held his breath, pressed himself against the wall, and moved slowly.
The sound of two people talking could be heard coming in from outside.
"Why haven't we heard from the third brother yet?" It was the skinny man's voice. "Could he have died?"
"So what if it's broken?" the tall man said in a hoarse voice. "We'll wait three days. If he doesn't come, we'll leave."
"Where to?"
"Head west, cross the border."
"What about this place..."
"Never mind. If the mission fails, going back is the same as dying."
The two remained silent for a while.
The skinny guy said again, "Damn, that woman last night was really weird. How did she know the baby was there?"
"Who knows?" the tall man scoffed. "She's lucky she survived the sandstorm."
"What a pity. If we had killed her, this matter would have become completely unexplainable..."
He hadn't finished speaking.
Suddenly a shadow leaped out from behind the wall.
The taller man reacted quickly, rolling backward to avoid it.
The skinny man was a beat too slow and was kicked in the chest by Bai Rongbei. He flew through the air, crashed into the earthen wall, and coughed up blood.
"Who?!" the tall man shouted, drawing his knife from his waist.
Bai Rongbei didn't say anything, but flicked the rope in his hand, lashing out like a whip.
The taller man raised his knife to parry, the rope wrapped around the knife, and the two began to struggle.
The skinny man got up from the ground, drew his knife, and pounced from the side.
Bai Rongbei loosened his grip, discarding the rope, and dodged the skinny man's knife while simultaneously punching the tall man's wrist.
The tall man cried out in pain and dropped the knife.
Bai Rongbei caught the knife and slashed it with his backhand.
The blade sliced across the skinny man's arm, and blood splattered out.
The skinny man screamed and dropped his knife.
The tall man seized the opportunity to pounce on Bai Rongbei from behind and strangle him.
Bai Rongbei elbowed him in the ribs, and the tall man grunted, loosening his grip slightly.
Bai Rongbei broke free, turned around, and pressed the tip of his knife against the tall man's throat.
"Don't move," he said.
The tall man froze, too afraid to move.
The skinny man clutched his bleeding arm, his face deathly pale. He tried to run, but Bai Rongbei kicked him in the back of the knee, causing him to fall to his knees.
Bai Rongbei tied the two of them up tightly with a rope, so tightly that the rope cut into their flesh.
The taller man struggled, shouting, "Who the hell are you?!"
Bai Rongbei ignored him, picked up the knife from the ground, and weighed it in his hand.
Then he walked up to the tall man and squatted down.
"Last night," he began, his voice calm, "you injured a comrade."
The tall man glared at him: "So what if she is? She's lucky she's not dead!"
Bai Rongbei nodded.
Then he suddenly grabbed the tall man's right hand and pressed it to the ground.
Point the knife tip at your fingers.
"What are you doing?!" the tall man exclaimed in panic.
Bai Rongbei didn't speak, and pressed his knife down.
"Ah!" the tall man screamed.
The knife tip pierced between the fingers, slowly cutting downwards.
Blood gushed out, staining the sand red.
The skinny man watched from the side, trembling all over, his crotch soaked.
Bai Rongbei stopped after slicing one finger and looked at the tall man: "Does it hurt?"
The tall man was in so much pain that his face was contorted, he was covered in cold sweat, and he couldn't speak.
"Last night," Bai Rongbei's voice remained calm, "she was running alone in the Gobi Desert, cold and scared, almost freezing to death. I fucking wanted to kill you all!"
