Chapter 26 [The New Research Assistant]
Chapter 26 [The New Research Assistant]
A Piltover lady, and a law enforcement officer.
She actually said "I will uphold justice for you" to the core members of the Hillco gang, to this group of Zaunites who all had at least one murder charge against them.
Not to mention others, even Aaron and Jinx, who knew Caitlyn's personality, couldn't help but twitch their eyes a couple of times.
This scene is so bizarre, you know?
Those wary of Caitlin are secretly searching for weapons; those who feel Caitlin poses no immediate threat are trying hard to suppress their laughter.
Are the Piltover people going to stand up for the people of Zaun?
Am I crazy, or is the world crazy?
Meanwhile, Hillco, whose expression remained largely unchanged, scanned Aaron and Jinx with his gloomy eyes.
The meaning is self-evident;
Is this the accomplice you brought in today?
A Piltover enforcer?!
"Ahem, I think Officer Caitlin makes a lot of sense."
Aaron, who had originally planned to leave and quietly ponder the "new function" that the black box had just unlocked, found the situation too awkward and worried that it might lead to some unpredictable consequences, so he had to speak up again.
He first nodded to Caitlin, confirming her meaning.
Then he winked at the crowd: "If necessary, Piltover can indeed provide some coordination."
"If the Urgot situation is not handled properly as soon as possible, it could very well become a threat to both cities."
Aaron's meaning was simple:
Since Urgot wants people to step into his testing ground, and Caitlyn, who can barely represent Piltover, has also agreed, why not try to let the Piltover people pave the way for the Zaunites?
But these words took on a slightly different meaning to some people—
"Oh~"
Sevika believed she had understood Aaron's implication.
She gave a strange "oh," her eyes shifting back and forth between Caitlin and Aaron, before finally glancing at Jinx, who was rolling her eyes.
She felt she had a clear understanding of the situation.
Sevika then quickly quelled the chaotic chatter of the others, as if she had suddenly accepted Caitlin as a unique "partner".
"Well done, Aaron, you've got some skills."
Sevika smiled mischievously, then, in a rather cheesy way, reached out and patted Caitlin on the shoulder:
"Keep happy, little girl, we're willing to believe you now! Aaron invited... the law enforcement officer~"
"It has nothing to do with him!"
Caitlin felt a little pain from the slap, flinched, and frowned, trying to explain that she didn't have much of a relationship with this mysterious guy, Aaron.
But it was too late for her to speak.
Seemingly lost in thought, Hilco extended his hand and politely asked Caitlin and the group of middle-level personnel to leave the room temporarily.
The next thing he wanted to discuss with everyone was the details of the Glimmer Potion. Only Sevika, Gustav, and the ever-silent Singed remained in the room.
"What trick have you pulled this time?!"
"Who are those people? What exactly are you in Zaun...?"
As soon as Caitlin stepped out of the room, she rushed up to Aaron and questioned him in an unfriendly tone.
Due to the series of unforeseen events and Jinx's natural concern, she had already shifted her main focus away from "investigating Aaron."
Today, in the room, these menacing "Aaron's relatives and friends," and their absolute trust in Aaron, rekindled Caitlin's vigilance.
She now vaguely feels that she has grasped part of the truth behind the fog:
At the very least, Aaron's status in Zaun is definitely not simple!
"Hey Kate (Cake), stop asking! Everyone just accepted you, didn't they?"
"Please don't make things difficult for Aaron, okay?"
Before Caitlin could finish her question, Jinx, who had followed Aaron out step by step, interrupted her.
Jinx grabbed Caitlin's arm and called her by her nickname for the first time, trying to pull her away in a very intimate manner.
Because she could tell from Aaron's expression that he was in a state of extreme focus, just like when he was studying mecha blueprints.
Jinx didn't want anyone to bother him, so naturally she had to help him deal with Caitlin.
This clever girl, just as she had figured out Aaron before, had accurately grasped Caitlin's little "weakness"—Catlin is responsive to gentle persuasion but not to force; she appears fair and impartial, but in reality, she shows favoritism.
For Aaron's sake, Xiao Jin was willing to sacrifice her "appearance" and coquettishly pressed her body against Caitlin's back.
"……snort!"
as predicted.
Caitlin remained silent for a moment, then gave a weak snort and withdrew her interrogation.
Her expression actually softened when she heard Jinx call her by her nickname.
Later, when Jinx whispered in her ear, Caitlyn's eyes widened in panic for a moment, and she had to suppress the strange look on her face by breathing more rapidly.
"Alright, alright, I won't ask anymore. I'll give you a chance."
Caitlin didn't dare turn around and meet Jinx's gaze, so she stiffened her neck and looked at Aaron, who had his back to her.
She held up a finger: "I can tell you hold a high position in Zaun, and your 'family' doesn't seem like... Anyway, once you've thought it through, you must tell me the truth!"
"If I find out you have any dirty secrets or shady schemes, you..."
"No."
"Huh?"
Aaron suddenly turned his head, startling Caitlin.
She was still caught in an internal struggle, wanting to accommodate Jinx's request on one hand, but not wanting to lose face on the other, and didn't hear what Aaron said at all.
"I said no need, I can have a proper talk with you now."
Aaron lowered his voice, his eyes flashing with an inexplicable emotion that neither Caitlyn nor Jinx could decipher, and slowly uttered the following sentence:
"Didn't you want to know my secret?"
"Perfect timing, I'd be happy for you to know."
……
If the black box obtained some "sci-fi" ideas from the original world, then those ideas became "orders" that Aaron wanted to complete as best he could.
So what the black box obtained from Runeterra was the "shortcut" that Aaron had been overlooking, a shortcut that could quickly complete those creative ideas.
The black box system is called "Inspiration"!
Just like Jinx awkwardly piloting a scrapped prototype mecha, it wasn't until today's accidental encounter that Aaron discovered "inspiration" and its uses—
Each native of Runeterra possesses a unique "inspiration" based on their individual talents.
Aaron simply needs to give the samples from each order to the other party for use, and the black box can collect their "inspiration" and turn it into a modification experience that perfectly conforms to the rules of Runeterra.
This greatly speeds up the process of Aaron completing the "order"!
In other words, if Jinx hadn't cared so much about Aaron and hadn't restrained her true nature for nine long years, she would never have thought of secretly playing with Aaron's mech.
Perhaps that "order" that had troubled Aaron for nine years had already been successfully completed with the help of the "inspiration" provided by Jinx...
"To figure out exactly what went wrong with my renovation plan, I decided to look for inspiration at the Progress Day celebration in Piltover, and that's when I happened to run into you."
"And you've given me an even easier opportunity to visit Piltover University directly, so..."
Aaron paused slightly at this point.
He observed that Caitlin had fully grasped the cause and effect, and understood the little tricks he had used on her, and her expression was not very pleasant.
Come to think of it, it would be strange if Caitlin were in a good mood.
Although Aaron took her and Jinx to another room, he seemed to know everything.
He concealed the existence of the "black box" and the secrets about the Glimmer Potion, only saying that the science fiction ideas were his own and that the "order" came from an absolutely benevolent and neutral organization.
Every step appeared to be "open and aboveboard".
But hearing these words still filled Caitlin with a sense of anger, as if her intelligence had been insulted and she had been deceived.
It's good that you're willing to be honest.
But how could you treat me like a fool!
"Since you've heard of me, as the son of a wealthy businessman, why don't you come directly to me?"
"Do you think I'm the kind of guy who's inherently prejudiced against people from Zaun? If you had spoken politely, would I have refused to take you to the library?"
"Oh, I understand now."
"You set that fire on the cargo ship yourself, just to get my attention and then achieve your subsequent goals!"
Caitlin was already holding back her anger, and now she vented it all at once.
If she hadn't sensed the sincerity in Aaron's words and hadn't detected any suspicious points, she would have punched Aaron in the face!
Of course, Aaron didn't blame her.
The vast, chasm-like divide between the two cities was far beyond Caitlin's comprehension.
In addition, Caitlyn's experiences in Zaun included either Jinx trying to remain kind while she ate and drank with her, or Aaron and Smitch having a tense and exciting battle as if facing a formidable enemy.
Aaron knew he couldn't convince Caitlin with just a few words if he really did what she said...
Forget about going to the Piltover University Library; he'd probably be arrested by other officers as soon as he got to the police station to look for Caitlyn!
"Alright, Miss Caitlin, I think I have no more secrets that would displease you, do I?"
Aaron spread his hands.
He was relieved to see Caitlin pouting and reluctantly nodding, her face pale.
well.
Caitlin has accepted herself and forgiven herself for taking advantage of her last time.
In that case...
Aaron blinked, and the black box system interface, visible only to him, appeared on his retina—
[A new research assistant who can provide "inspiration" has been discovered: Caitlin Giramann]
[Should we mark and track the task?]
"Since you've forgiven me, wouldn't it be a waste for me not to take advantage of you a little longer?"
Aaron's unwavering smile and the way he looked at Caitlin made the policewoman feel uneasy.
