Chapter 102 Tiller
As the airflow from the drifting mantis shrimp shattered the glass of the Transfiguration classroom, Kane entered the classroom almost simultaneously with Professor McGonagall.
He hurriedly stuffed the mantis shrimp into the pumpkin and looked at Professor McGonagall's serious face, saying quickly, "The bell hasn't rung for the third time yet, so Professor, I shouldn't be late, right?"
Professor McGonagall looked at Kane with a stern face. Hmm... if Gryffindor weren't short of players right now, she would definitely pull Kane in.
That level of drifting and tail-sliding would be fantastic for a chaser, it's just a shame the team isn't short of players right now. If only we had a chaser this year, just like last year when the team was short of finders...
Unfortunately, all of this was just wishful thinking. She shook her wand, repaired the glass that Kane had shattered, and stood on the podium looking at Kane: "Well, you're not late."
After saying that, she put on a stern face again: "Our progress is already falling behind!"
When Kane heard this, he felt he could take a short nap for the first half of the class. Fortunately, Professor McGonagall only mentioned some findings from her holiday visits to Durmstrang and Beauxbatons Schools of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
The discovery that these two schools not only had a fast teaching pace but also excellent student discipline sent chills down the spines of the young wizards in the classroom.
Hmph, so what if they learn fast? Every three years, they're guaranteed to have a dark wizard posing as a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and then get killed by some random junior wizard at the end of the semester, right?
They also constantly demonstrate unorthodox magical combat in the school.
Even Voldemort had to leave his nose behind when he came to Hogwarts, a place of outstanding people and resources. Enemies would have shotguns, and friends would have to leave something behind, at the very least the Philosopher's Stone. So what if they progressed quickly and were well-disciplined?
If they ever come to Hogwarts to show off their power, they'll teach their invading friends a lesson in what it means to have a powerful spell and a precise wand strike.
Professor McGonagall, standing on the podium, was very satisfied with this scene. What she needed was for the young wizards to be fired up and then follow her to learn magic fiercely, fiercely!
Oh, except for Kane, he finally stopped wearing that horned hat today and put on his top hat that had been hammered into a cowboy hat again. His clothes had also changed to a dark purple patterned leather trench coat, which was much more normal than what he wore last semester.
The only downside was that he seemed to lack drive, as if what he had just said to them had nothing to do with them, even though it really didn't matter much, since there wasn't a three-way competition these days.
Professor McGonagall was somewhat exasperated by Kane's lack of interest, so she had no choice but to begin today's lesson plan. However, when she uttered the first word, Kane's eyes suddenly lit up.
Okay, maybe these top students don't need pre-school motivation.
After Professor McGonagall found Kane's first instruction manual, she continued lecturing until the end of get out of class. Kane quickly finished his meal in the auditorium and headed straight for the greenhouse.
Although Professor Sprout is most likely not here at this time, as a studious young wizard, his main goal is to live a sheltered and nurturing life.
Fortunately, the weather hasn't been particularly hot lately, so it's quite comfortable.
Kane sat on a small pumpkin by the greenhouse, waiting for Professor Sprout in a daze. After a while, Professor Sprout finally arrived.
"You're here so early, Kane. I should have given you this sooner," Professor Sprout said, pulling a small brass key from his pocket and handing it to Kane.
"You can come to the greenhouse by yourself from now on. Hmm, it's worth mentioning that you're now my only assistant." Professor Sprout said as he led Kane into the greenhouse.
"Aren't there any other upperclassmen or upperclasswomen?" Kane asked as he followed.
"Because they always graduate, I only have two assistants every seven years. It's a pity, though. If you had come to me last year, it would have been better." Professor Sprout said, leading Kane around the greenhouse.
The greenhouse is very large and divided into two parts. The outer part of the greenhouse is a plot of farmland that has been cultivated directly on the ground. It looks like it hasn't been turned over for a while, as the soil has hardened and clumped together. The central area consists of shelves filled with various flower pots, such as mandrakes that are not yet fully mature.
"Unfortunately, this mandrake is very delicate. In short, it should be different from what you've heard in legends. It takes exactly one year from growth to decay, so this plant is only ever grown this year, there's no stock... Of course, that's not entirely true. Perhaps someone uses some kind of time-freezing magic, but it's obviously not worth it for a mandrake that isn't that precious."
Professor Sprout, who seemed to recall Kane having stolen mandrakes last year, stopped to explain them to Kane as they walked through this area.
"I thought this thing had a long lifespan, after all, this grass looks so old at first glance," Kane said quietly.
"It's because it ages so quickly that it only has a one-year lifespan."
After Professor Sprout led Kane around the greenhouse, they returned to the edge of the clumps of farmland outside the greenhouse.
"Although I know what you really want to learn is the Weather Charm, I still think we should start with the basics, the Tilling the Land Charm. It's a variation that combines the Flying Charm, Levitation Charm, and Manipulation Charm. If you learn it, your understanding of these three spells will be quite good."
Professor Sprout began to wave his wand, and several small hoes on the edge of the field slowly flew up and began to dig, one stroke at a time.
"I'll give you my own understanding later, and you should be able to learn it very quickly."
Professor Sprout had barely finished speaking when Kane pulled out his wand, eager to try it out: "To be honest, Professor, I think I understand now. Could you give me some hoes to try?"
Professor Sprout calmly let one half of the hoe continue tilling the ground, while the other half flew to the corner of the wall and came to a steady stop.
Kane followed Professor Sprout's example and began by combining the three spells. The difference was that because it was a compound spell, there were no fixed hand gestures or incantations. The casting method was not so simple; everything had to be calculated and simulated by his own mind.
However, thanks to Kane's new brain being quite useful, he successfully got that half of the hoe to start tilling the land after only a few experiments.
Professor Sprout was somewhat surprised to see this: "Kane, don't waste your talent. You know, your two senior classmates who just graduated were my assistants from their freshman year, and they didn't learn this spell until their third year."
Kane smiled shyly: "Actually, it feels pretty simple, it's just that this kind of efficiency feels a bit slow."
Professor Sprout hesitated for a moment: "Perhaps you could use a larger hoe?"
Kane shook his head: "No, I was thinking about whether we could use a machine."
"You can give it a try. As far as I know, not all machines are affected by Hogwarts. After all, I once saw Severus teach with slides."
After receiving Professor Sprout's confirmation, Kane promptly returned the half of the hoe to Professor Sprout. He then ran to a nearby place and rummaged around inside the little pumpkin for a while, pulled out the flying broom, and quickly flew back to his dormitory to retrieve the alchemy engine, which he then forcefully stuffed into the little pumpkin's belly.
Then, using the small pumpkin, they made a tiller that wasn't much prettier than a wooden barrel that had come to life, and placed it on the still untouched farmland.
Professor Sprout put down his wand and looked at the simple machine in front of him with some curiosity.
"Will this thing actually work?"
"Hmm..." Kane stroked his chin. "This thing worked before. As for whether it still works now, let's experiment with it."
As he spoke, he suddenly pulled the lever on the tiller.
