Chapter 31 The Smiling Tiger
Chapter 31 The Smiling Tiger
This is an utter disgrace.
Since its establishment, the Upper East Side Police Station has never suffered such a humiliating defeat.
Gregory Barnes realized he was doomed; his prestige within the police department would plummet, and his position as section chief would be over.
With his right-hand man Le Bon Dupont dead last night and Barnes's own prestige plummeting today, the newly appointed chief inspector is unlikely to let go of such a good opportunity to eliminate dissidents.
Gregory Barnes knew he was finished. He had lost even the right to be "The Glove." Those high-ranking figures would only see him as useless trash, and worthless trash should be discarded without hesitation.
Barnes gritted his teeth as he looked at Mike by the carriage. Apart from gritting his teeth, there was nothing else Barnes could do at the moment.
Hector Evans, standing nearby, realized that his old friend was probably doomed. His selfishness had brought great humiliation to the Upper City Police Department, and there was no longer a place for him there.
Evans also looked at Mike by the carriage. He had been wondering last night what Mike Montague relied on to oppose the Uptown Police Department, and now he understood.
If Mike Montagu were the kind of person who acted completely recklessly, the Uptown Police Department could very well have been wiped out overnight.
Then, Evans looked at Jolena with relief. The greater the chance that Montague would survive the catastrophe, the safer Jolena would be, even if she was no longer valued by the police department.
Just as Anastasia was holding a group of people under her control, more people came out of the police station building.
This man was a round, chubby fat man, not the kind of obese and irritating figure like Le Bon Dupont, but rather someone with an endearing and simple charm.
The round, fat man walked out of the building and down the stone steps at the entrance. Although he walked slowly, he made his way step by step toward the courtyard gate, toward Anastasia who was standing there.
Jolina can run and jump because Anastasia's killing intent did not fall on her. The round, fat man can walk because his own strength is enough to withstand Anastasia's killing intent and prevent the tangible killing intent from affecting him.
Anastasia raised an eyebrow, saying that the Upper City Police Department couldn't possibly be full of useless incompetent people.
"Miss Angel, I am the head of the logistics department of the Upper City Police Department."
The chubby man spoke very politely, as if he hadn't noticed Anastasia's humiliation of the Upper City Police Department.
"My name is Tobias Gibson... However, Miss Angel doesn't need to remember the name of such a nobody as me, nor am I Miss Angel's enemy."
Tobias Gibson was parachuted into the Upper East Side Police Department with the Chief Inspector and was the Chief Inspector's only confidant among the division chiefs.
“Mr. Gibson, I think you’ve misunderstood,” Anastasia said. “My employer, Mr. Montague, is a law-abiding citizen; he’s not here to antagonize the police department.”
This statement was tantamount to a resounding slap in the face to the Upper East Side Police Department.
It was the Upper East Side Police Department that first took action against law-abiding citizens, which led to the retaliation and humiliation from law-abiding citizens.
"Mr. Gibson, my employer, Mr. Montague, is deeply disheartened," Anastasia continued. "A day and a night have passed, and the police still haven't found any information about the bodies."
"Please allow me to apologize to Mr. Montagu for this," Tobias Gibson said with a forced smile. He not only smiled but also bowed to Mike behind Anastasia to express his apology.
They say you can't hit a smiling face, but Gibson, that smiling face, was completely stumped by Anastasia.
What's going on here?
How can they still smile and fawn over the Upper East Side Police Station after humiliating them like this?
Even if it's not a matter of determining superiority or death, one should at least be furious!
Anastasia was a little confused about Gibson's true nature, and could only think of him as a two-faced, hypocritical person.
Such hypocritical people are often the most insidious. They may have a smiling face, but they are more ruthless than anyone else when it comes to tripping you up. If you are not careful, you will die without even knowing how.
"Mr. Gibson, you flatter me." Anastasia smiled as well. "My employer, Mr. Montague, as a taxpayer, simply hopes that the police department can solve the case as soon as possible and restore peace and tranquility to the Upper City."
When it comes to eloquence, Anastasia Angel believes she is second to none.
"Of course, we will solve this case as soon as possible and give the taxpayers of the Upper City an explanation." Gibson's face was full of smiles, as if this was the only expression he could make.
"That would be best," Anastasia said with a smile. "Mr. Gibson may not know, but my employer, Mr. Montague, is now almost afraid to go out. The nights in the Upper Town are becoming as dangerous as those in the Old Town."
Although Anastasia was laughing, she didn't hesitate to slap the police officer across the face.
One of the culprits behind the perilous nights in the Upper East Side is the Upper East Side Police Department. They were supposed to maintain public order, but instead they became accomplices to criminals.
"We will definitely give Mr. Montagu a satisfactory answer as soon as possible." Gibson was still smiling, but his tone was very serious. "From now on, Mr. Montagu can go out with peace of mind."
"I hope Mr. Gibson keeps his word." Anastasia's smile faded. "Liars have to swallow a thousand needles!"
Tobias Gibson is making overtures to Montague, indicating that the Uptown Police Department will no longer be involved in the attacks against him.
Anastasia, however, was warning Tobias Gibson that Gibson couldn't possibly be unaware that LeBon Dupont's nail bed had been pierced and torn by a fine needle.
"Please rest assured, Miss Angel and Mr. Montague, the Chief Inspector has personally taken charge of this matter." Gibson said with a smile, bringing up the top figure in the Upper City Police Department and also removing the Chief Inspector from the blame for the attack.
Tobias Gibson bowed again and asked politely, "Miss Angel, may I have a brief conversation with Mr. Montague? Just a minute will do."
Anastasia didn't say anything, but simply made way for Gibson.
Anastasia was standing right there, so even if Gibson wanted to attack, she could save Mike in time.
Thank you.
Gibson thanked him and then walked toward Mike, who was standing by the carriage.
With each step he took closer to Mike, he felt the pressure on him increasing, making it hard to breathe.
Gibson knew perfectly well that the private investigator named Anastasia was on guard against him, on guard against him attacking Mike Montagu.
Despite being the distrusted one, Tobias Gibson wasn't unhappy at all. Instead, he was eager to recruit Anastasia to his command.
Even if Gibson's own position would be affected, he didn't care at all. If the chief inspector could recruit someone like Anastasia to work for him, that would be a real boost to his power.
"Mr. Montagu".
Tobias Gibson walked up to the carriage and, despite being a much younger man, spoke very politely to him.
"Please allow me to convey Mr. Lopez's greetings to you," Gibson continued. "Mr. Lopez is deeply sorry for what happened to you, and he will certainly give you a satisfactory reply."
Mike didn't show it on his face, but he was very frustrated inside.
He tidied himself up, thinking he was the main character today, but it turned out he was still just a supporting character.
Although he was feeling frustrated, Mike still maintained his composure and said, "Mr. Gibson, please give my regards to Mr. Lopez."
The "Mr. Lopez" that Tobias Gibson mentioned was the chief detective of the Uptown Police Department. Mike, being the son of a well-known tycoon, knew the surname Lopez.
Mike was very puzzled. Montagu and Lopez had never had much interaction, so why was this chief inspector acting as if he was on Montagu's side?
Anastasia, standing to the side, was thinking rapidly. From the Bureau of Investigation to the Beyonders, and from the mysterious woman to the old political family Lopez, the scope of this power struggle against the Montagu family was getting wider and wider.
However, Anastasia wasn't too worried. If someone wanted to target Montague, then someone else would want to protect him. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
For a private detective shrouded in mystery, the bigger the infighting against Montague, the better, and the more people involved, the better.
"Mr. Montague, Mr. Lopez also asked me to convey his invitation to Mr. Montague to dinner, at a time you deem appropriate," Gibson said, relaying Lopez's overture once again.
Upon hearing this, Mike became even more puzzled.
Montague had little to do with Lopez, and he himself had no connection with the chief inspector.
Judging from their ages alone, the young Mr. Montague wouldn't get along with Mr. Lopez, who is capable of serving as Chief Inspector; the two are at least ten years apart in age.
"I admire Mr. Lopez's charisma and would love to hear his teachings," Mike said. "But before that, I have to pick up my friend from get off work; she looks like she's been up all night."
Anastasia and Mike came to the police station to ambush her, ostensibly to pick up Jolina from get off work.
Now that the goal of blocking the crowd and demonstrating has been achieved, it's time to pick up Qiao Lina from get off work. The radiant beauty detective already has dark circles under her eyes from staying up all night.
At this moment, Tobias Gibson turned to look at the somewhat bewildered Jolena and said to her, "Detective Joyce, the Chief Inspector has approved a week of paid leave for you. Take this time to rest well!"
While Gibson wasn't as polite as he had been to Anastasia and Mike when he said this, he was very amiable, as if he were talking to a close junior.
The holiday was a good thing for Jolena; with Gregory Barnes's prestige plummeting, Jolena's situation wouldn't be much better.
The officers dared not do anything to Jolina because of Montague's retaliation, but some rumors and underhanded sabotage were still inevitable.
After all, Jolene Joyce's behavior can be considered disloyal and treacherous.
